Hourly Qimen: The Most Common Application

Qimen Dunjia has several branches — Yearly, Monthly, Daily, and Hourly. The Hourly system (时家奇门, Shíjiā Qímén) is the most widely used today and the basis for most practical decision support.

How Hourly Qimen Works

Each two-hour period (one traditional 时辰) generates a unique Qimen chart configuration. The symbols rotate through a specific sequence tied to the 60-cycle Stem-Branch system and the current solar term period.

The chart produced reflects the quality of the current moment for various types of action.

A Typical Reading Process

  1. Define the question clearly: "Is this a good time to sign the contract?" or "Which direction should I take for this negotiation?"
  2. Cast the chart for the current date and hour
  3. Identify the relevant palace: Each type of activity maps to specific gates and directions
  4. Read the combination: What gate, star, stem, and deity occupy the relevant palace?
  5. Interpret the quality: Is the configuration supportive, neutral, or challenging for this specific purpose?

Important Limitations

  • Hourly Qimen gives a snapshot of current environmental conditions — it doesn't override practical preparation or skill.
  • Different schools of Qimen use different casting methods. Configurations vary accordingly.
  • The system is most useful for time-sensitive decisions when multiple options are available and preparation is already in place.
